[The FastTrack program] has provided us with a lot more reliability and more structure around the timeline for a donor transplant. We’ve been able to speed up the time to transplant, and I think that’s only a good thing for patients.”

FastTrack Search frequently asked questions

What is FastTrack Search?

FastTrack Search is an accelerated unrelated donor search process featuring simultaneous donor CT testing. This allows us to quickly identify unrelated donors ready for workup.

Why should I use FastTrack Search?

FastTrack Search is most valuable for patients who must have a transplant quickly and have multiple well-matched unrelated donor options.

Who can I talk to about FastTrack Search?

To enroll a patient in FastTrack Search, send your Case Manager a completed enrollment form. You can also send your question to our FastTrack Search Program Manager, Jake Buchholz.

Be sure to fill out all of the form fields, which include:

  • Patient demographic information
  • Product preference
  • Patient’s estimated transplant timeline
  • A list of up to 10 unrelated donors who are ranked in your preferred order

If you have a completed Search Strategy Advice (SSA) report from the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP)/Be The Match®, you do not need to fill out the enrollment form. Instead, send your Case Manager:

  • Completed SSA report
  • Product preference
  • Patient’s estimated transplant timeline
How much does FastTrack Search cost?

FastTrack Search costs a flat fee of $7,625, plus the formal search activation fee.

What is included in the FastTrack Search flat fee?

The flat fee replaces our typical à la carte search fees. It includes the cost of all of the following:

  • All unrelated donor CT blood draws
  • IDM testing
  • HLA-CT testing for up to five donors at our contract laboratory
Why is flat-fee pricing better for my patient?

Flat-fee pricing allows for more flexibility in how we request unrelated donors. With our à la carte pricing structure, we needed to charge a separate fee for each donor blood draw with subsequent IDM testing.

This created delays because there was typically back and forth with a transplant center to stay within the confines of what the patient could afford. By avoiding that back and forth, we can get your patient an unrelated donor faster because we can test more than one donor at a time.

With this fee structure, FastTrack Search is the most cost effective for patients who have more than one potential unrelated donor.

For patients with only one potential related or unrelated donor, our FastTrack Testing program provides you with allele-level HLA typing and other testing results for patients and donors (related and unrelated) in three days or less.

Do I need to perform HLA-CT testing at my transplant center’s lab?

No, the testing performed at our contract lab fulfills all of our CT policy requirements as well as those outlined by FACT.

If you need to do the CT testing at your transplant center’s lab, we recommend using pre-collects at the time of workup. If needed, a third sample can be sent to your transplant center lab at the time of CT.

Which lab are you working with to provide HLA-CT testing?

We contract with the American Red Cross (ARC) East Division HLA Services to provide HLA-CT testing for our transplant centers. ARC maintains ASHI accreditation for all testing performed.

ARC has a long history of working with transplant centers to provide HLA-CT testing and with the NMDP/Be The Match as a contract lab partner for recruitment typing and customized typing.

What is the turnaround time to get results back from the lab?

The lab will provide results in three business days or less from the time the sample arrives at the lab.

How do I receive the lab results?

Lab reports are emailed to you. In addition, CT results of unrelated donors are automatically electronically reported to NMDP/Be The Match via electronic form 22.

All unrelated donors for a patient will appear on one comprehensive lab report with mismatches noted.

Which loci does the lab test for each unrelated donor?

The lab performs allele level HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, -DQB1, -DPB1, -DRB345, -DQA1 and -DPA1 typing for each donor.

What methodology is the lab using for HLA testing?

The lab primarily uses long-range sequencing using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Either Exon 2-3 Sanger SBT or Luminex SSO is used for parallel typing.

Parallel typing is used to verify sample identity, guard against potential allele drop-out, and report preliminary data if NGS is unsatisfactory at the first attempt and is being repeated.

The FastTrack program impacted my treatment incredibly. The fact that my donor was able to be found as quickly as it was I feel is the reason I am sitting here today and doing as well as I am.”
