Recruitment in Mexico to help address significant need for Hispanic donors
The likelihood of finding an HLA-matched adult donor on the Be The Match Registry for a patient of Mexican ethnic background is currently about 37%1. This indicates a significant gap in our registry and one that we are aiming to reduce in order to help more patients in need, both in the United States and abroad.
To help meet the needs of searching patients globally, we are expanding our recruitment efforts into Mexico. New members recruited in Mexico will be listed on the Be The Match Registry, designated by their association with donor center 137. Within the next several months, we plan to establish donor center operations in Mexico, including hiring community engagement representatives and workup specialists.
“We intend to make significant progress by helping more patients in the U.S. and Mexico find a cure,” said Yvonne Ybarra, Senior Manager, International Product Development. “We’ve already formed strong relationships with transplant centers, collection centers and apheresis centers in several cities.”
These partnerships will also help increase our capacity to support related donor collection for U.S. patients whose relatives live in Mexico. Currently, our highest number of requests for international related donors is in Mexico.
