Our goal is to help your patients overcome financial barriers to transplant. We’ve simplified our application process and moved it completely online, so you can get your patients the financial assistance they need faster and with less paperwork.

Who is eligible for patient financial assistance  

Patients are eligible for financial assistance if they are:

  • Pre-transplant and have conducted a formal search through the NMDP/Be The Match with the intention to move forward with an allogeneic transplant
  • Post-transplant and the NMDP/Be The Match facilitated their related or unrelated donor transplant
  • Taking part in a clinical trial to treat a blood cancer or a blood disorder and need assistance covering their travel expenses

What patient financial assistance can cover

Patient financial assistance helps your patient overcome barriers they may encounter before or after transplant. The following list includes the most common examples but is not comprehensive.

Pre-Transplant (up to $3,000):

  • Unexpected financial barriers, like unemployment or extended hospital stay expenses
  • Out-of-pocket costs related to medical care, such as copays for prescriptions, clinic visits and dental work
  • Non-medical out-of-pocket expenses for patients and caregivers, like temporary housing, food and gas
  • Travel costs related to clinical trials
  • Inadequate health insurance coverage for:
    • HLA typing of first-degree relative(s)
    • An unrelated donor search (SAF) – use this letter as confirmation of pre-approval of search and procurement activities (up to $20,000)

Post-Transplant (up to $2,000):

  • Out-of-pocket costs after transplant, such as copays for prescriptions and clinic visits
  • Non-medical out-of-pocket expenses for patients and caregivers, like temporary housing, food and gas
  • Uncovered medication and copay/coinsurance expenses from chronic graft-versus-host disease management more than one year after transplant
  • Extraordinary financial crisis that threatens your patient’s ability to access post-transplant care
  • Travel costs associated with clinical trials

How to apply for patient financial assistance 

We’ve simplified our application process. You no longer need to apply for a specific grant for your patient. Instead, you’ll tell us the financial barriers your patient is experiencing using our online application. Our Patient Financial Assistance team will review your request, determine patient eligibility and provide financial assistance using a sliding scale.

Applications are submitted electronically through our secure platform. The data in this application is for internal use only and will never be shared. After July 17th we will no longer accept paper applications.

Applications must be submitted by a healthcare professional in order to be accepted and can take two-five business days to review.

If approved, patients will receive their financial assistance in the form of the payment method selected in the application. See the online application for all payment details. Financial assistance amounts can vary based on budget and patient need.

Our Patient Financial Assistance Program is funded by the Be The Match Foundation® and facilitated through our Patient Financial Assistance team.

Be The Match COVID-19 Financial Relief

We want to help ensure your patients can maintain their access to life-saving treatment. We are providing a one-time, $500 financial relief grant to help patients with medical or non-medical expenses during this challenging time.

Patients do not need a COVID-19 diagnosis to qualify. To be eligible, these requirements must be met:

  • If pre-transplant: Your center must be located in the U.S. and have initiated the patient’s formal search with the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP)/Be The Match® on or after March 1, 2019, with the intention to move forward with an allogeneic transplant.
  • If post-transplant: The patient must have received an unrelated or related transplant facilitated by NMDP/Be The Match on or after March 1, 2019.

The Ira and Diana Riklis Crisis Grant

With funding generously provided to the Be The Match Foundation®, the National Marrow Donor Program®/Be The Match® can provide financial help for patients experiencing a significant financial need following transplant. The Ira and Diana Riklis Crisis Grant can give a limited number of qualified patients a grant up to $15,000 to help toward a crisis event following transplant.

To be eligible, these requirements must be met:

  • Patient must reside in the United States
  • Patient had an NMDP facilitated tranplant within the last 12 months
  • Patient is still actively receiving post-transplan care
  • Transplant center team affirms patient eligibility and need, and submits application
  • Patient/family has an emergency or crisis event that is impacting post-transplant care
  • Income does not exceed monthly costs - including costs needed for the crisis
  • Patient's household income does not exceed 350% of the federal poverty line
